On any given weekday, you may find Millersville University (MU) students, faculty and staff swimming in the pool at Pucillo Gymnasium. This fall, the University is opening the pool on weekends for veterans to learn how to kayak.
From now through mid-April, the Susquehanna Valley Team River Runner (TRR) will lead pool sessions in Pucillo to teach veterans basic kayak and safety skills, and to train future instructors in adaptive paddling techniques. The nonprofit organization, made up of experienced kayakers, canoeists and instructors, offers free adventure paddling training to combat veterans as a form of health and healing.
“The program is physically demanding and socially supportive to help participants develop a lifestyle of fitness and outdoor adventure,” explains Dr. Gordon Nesbitt, director of campus recreation.
