President
Hal is the Chief Operations Officer of the Clark Construction Group in Bethesda, Maryland. Clark is one of the largest construction contractors in the United States. Hal is the son of a career Army officer who was wounded in Germany in World War II. His father spent a year recovering and rehabilitating at Walter Reed and would have loved to have had a program like Team River Runner at that time. Hal earned a Civil Engineering Degree from Layafette College and a Masters in Business Administration from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Upon graduation in 1976 Hal began work for Clark Construction (then The George Hyman Construction Company). Prior to TRR Hal served on the Board of Directors of Strathmore Hall for nine years. Hal and his wife, Marylouise reside in Derwood, Maryland and have three boys, Brian, Kevin, and Andrew. The family spends summer weekends boating on Deep Creek Lake in Garrett County, Maryland. Hal has been involved with Team River Runner since 2009.

Michael (Mike) R. Micholas has over 30 years of audit, accounting, tax, and consulting experience. As CohnReznick’s Managing Partner for the Mid-Atlantic Region, his responsibilities include overseeing daily operations, developing marketing plans and programs, hiring qualified, top-notch people, leading partner meetings and firm retreats, developing profitable business opportunities, coordinating staff efforts, identifying and reviewing potential merger and acquisition candidates, coordinating federal government contracting work, preparing and presenting proposals, and charting the future direction of the region.
Mike has expertise in auditing and accounting for not-for-profit organizations and construction contractors. His responsibilities have included directing auditing and management consulting engagements, reviewing internal control structures, overseeing audit and financial statement processes, and performing information systems requirement analyses and diagnostic reviews. He has extensive experience in providing accounting services to companies that outsource their accounting functions, assisting clients in developing corporate structures, strategic planning, employee benefit plan design, and business process planning.
Mike is active in the AICPA’s Major Firms group. He also serves as an executive committee member of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Ball and is a Board of Governor of the Washington Building Congress.

Doug Makosy is President of Kirlin Design Build, LLC. Doug has over twenty-five years of design-build experience in both the public and private sectors, including more than twenty years in the Mid-Atlantic region. He has procured and managed many of the largest federal design-build projects in the Mid-Atlantic region in the past fifteen years. Doug is responsible for managing the in-house engineering staff as well as all construction operations for Kirlin Design Build Group. Doug earned his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Miami and a Masters of Business from the University of Maryland.

Eric is the Medical Director and Managing Veterinarian at PetCentre Animal Hospital in Manassas, VA. He holds degrees from the University of Virginia (BA, 1980) and Virginia Tech (MS, 1982; DVM, 1986). His previous non-profit experience includes serving as Medical Director of the Washington Animal Rescue League and as a veterinary surgeon for the Washington Human Society. An outdoor enthusiast, Eric has been an active whitewater kayak paddler in the Washington, DC region since 1994. Eric began working with TRR in 2004 as a kayak instructor and trip leader, and he is a founding member of the TRR Board of Directors. He lives in Fairfax, VA, with his wife, Krisa, who also served as a TRR Director from 2006-2009. His “second home” is the Potomac River, but he loves to travel to paddle rivers whenever he can!

Vanessa A. Jones is a dynamic force dedicated to fostering
inclusivity, encouraging discussion, and promoting a culture of
belonging in the outdoor sports community. Hailing from
Washington, DC, she brings a wealth of diverse experiences and
perspectives to her endeavors.
As a US Army veteran and ordained Chaplain with a focus on
seniors and caretakers, Vanessa is deeply committed to serving
others. Her work as a patient-caretaker advocate reflects her
passion for supporting vulnerable populations and ensuring their
voices are heard.
Currently, Vanessa is employed by a resettlement agency, where
she confronts challenges head-on with resilience and
compassion. As a single, Black woman veteran, she embraces
the unique hurdles she faces, viewing them as opportunities for
growth and empowerment.
In her downtime, she wears many hats, including that of a
missionary, spreading hope and positivity wherever she goes.
Weekends are spent paddling, immersing herself in West African
dance and finding solace and joy in nature’s embrace.
Vanessa is committed to equitable principles, ensuring that
everyone’s opinions are valued and heard. Through her
unwavering dedication and inclusive leadership, Vanessa is
paving the way for a more equitable and diverse outdoor sports
landscape.
