Physical Therapist at Walter Reed Army Medical

TRR has clearly added a new dimension to our rehabilitation program for wounded warriors. Kayaking incorporates many of the therapeutic goals our wounded service members are trying to achieve in rehabilitation. It develops core stability necessary for good posture and balance during ambulation. It improves flexibility, enhances coordination, and builds strength and endurance. All these elements are included in any high-level therapy program, but kayaking helps our wounded achieve even more. It helps them build confidence and overall self esteem in a friendly and encouraging environment surrounded by peers, expert instructors, families and friends. This helps them heal physically, emotionally, spiritually and socially.

How often do injured loved ones get together with family and friends on the weekend to participate in a hospital prescribed exercise program? Not often enough. However, thanks to TRR they do it and are starting to return to a more normal lifestyle. Participation in recreation and sports with family and friends is key to rehabilitating our young and otherwise physically fit heroes to their highest potential possible. Team River Runner understands this and has welcomed not only wounded warriors to the kayaking classes and excursions, but their family and friends as well.
