As a volunteer, I get to see some amazing things, like a big wave surfer who can no longer stand on a board tearing up the same waves on a competition level waveski, like a man who loves taking his kids out with him in his adaptive kayak to teach them about the bay, and prosthetics lying all over the beach, with no way of telling who belongs to them, because everybody moves the same in a kayak.
The most powerful thing about TRR is its ripple effect. Yes, kayaking can provide physical, psycho-social, cognitive and emotional benefits and create a new identity for the paddler, but the magic happens because it is a venue for a person who has been through hell to create hope again, and that uniquely qualifies them to help the next person going through hell to find hope, too, a domino effect that never stops.
