When: September 24 – 30, 2019 (5 days/ 5 nights, 6th day travel home)
The TRR National Leadership Clinic will consist of 5 days / 5 nights of flat water kayaking, SUP and camping through Labyrinth Canyon section of the Green River near Green River, Utah. The 45 mile wilderness river stretch meanders through a canyon that is a geologic wonderland with canyon walls composed of layered sandstone. Hiking, pictographs and sandy beaches await the group each day. Each paddler will be able to navigate either a SOT touring kayak or SUP Board. Backcountry leadership topics such as self supported packing techniques, wilderness exploration/navigation techniques, and camp/kitchen responsibilities will be taught.
The purpose of this leadership clinic is to strengthen our organization by providing leadership training and skill building opportunities to qualified candidates nominated from within their chapters. Throughout the trip, we will focus on sharing successes and barriers in which we’ve encountered within our TRR Chapter. Our goal is to provide an environment in which each participant gains the confidence and leadership skills to positively impact their local TRR chapters.
– 10 participants selected from TRR Chapters
– 4-5 TRR volunteer/staff (raft support and SOT/SUP guide)
We are seeking service-connected veterans who are actively participating within their local chapters. Qualified nominees, should have an interest learning backcountry leadership skills and are comfortable paddling class 1 river for 10-12 miles per day. It is highly recommended that nominees are currently or are interested in supporting their local chapter either through instruction, fundraising, veteran outreach, program / volunteer coordination and TRR promotion. The ideal candidate would be considered a role model within his/her chapter.
Experience / Paddling Skills:
Ideal candidate would have prior experience on a multi day river or flat-water trip and be physically able to independently paddle their own craft 10+ miles per day with a class 1 river or flat water setting. Candidate must be willing and able to participate in camp duties and leadership topics. Depending on participants paddling skill level and interest, the participant will have an opportunity to paddle either a SOT Touring Kayak or SUP board. Adaptive paddling equipment may will be available.
Travel / Transportation:
Participants will be traveling to Grand Junction, CO on Tuesday September 24, 2019. Group will be traveling to ruby Ranch put-in either that afternoon/evening or early the next day. The river portion of the clinic will end around mid-afternoon on Sunday September 29, 2019. Group will travel back to Grand Junction and camp at Bryans Lake before departing home on Monday September 30, 2019.
• Gas reimbursement for travel
• Kayaking equipment will be provided; participants within driving distance may be asked to provide chapter kayaking gear if needed.
• Camping equipment will be provided; tents, sleeping bag, sleeping pad and dry bags. Participants will be asked to bring appropriate kayaking and camping clothing with them on the trip.
• Food and Non-Alcoholic beverages will be provided by TRR. Participant will be responsible for purchasing a total of 1-2 meals during traveling days.
